On Decision Making

Recently, I was at a workshop where the speaker suggested writing a contract with myself. Listed in this contract would be my non-negotiable(s). An example, she gave was, not to commit to anything new in which I couldn’t give 100%.

Right away, my inner cells started doing the happy dance (it’s great to get such a strong signal from my body). Wow, that consideration alone is a great tool to add to my tool bag.  Considering that specific criteria for every new decision sends a strong message to my inner being that I am taking care not to schedule too much. It is also a thoughtful way to treat the requester, even if I have to say no in the end.

Wrapping up the contract idea…other criteria is that you are allowed to modify the contract at THE END of any day.  This means that you adhere to your non-negotiable(s) throughout the entire day. You are not allowed to change the contract during the day to fit the circumstances. Some have a contract with a few non-negotiable items and some have a contract with pages. It is your contract, you choose.

In the end, I didn't create a contract but I did add the question, "Can I give 100% to this?" to my current decision making process. In addition, my process for decision making includes checking to make sure that no matter what it is, it is in alignment with my top three values (Love, Joy and Beauty) and that it does not interfere with any of my current priorities or self-care.

If this sounds like a process you would like to try it is important to be clear on not only your values but also on what your top priorities are and what self-care looks like for you.

There are plenty of value assessments available out on the web or you can always hire a coach to guide you through the process. The most important part of the  process is setting aside dedicated time for yourself regularly so that you are creating the life you want. Creating the life you want cannot happen if you are not clear on what it is you want.

Give yourself some love and do the inner work. Get clear on your values, your priorities and what you really want your life to look like. Because you matter.

Be Well. Be Intentional. Create a life you love.

Love, Brenda
